Forces of Darkness

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12)

What do Adoni-zedek, Hoham, Piram, Japhia and Debir have in common?
These are the 5 Kings of five nations who (after the Kings of Jericho and Ai) sought to deny Israel its inheritance. All fought against God’s people. All were defeated.

Just as those Kings’ names are strange sounding and unfamiliar to us many thousands of years removed from when God dispossessed evil (practices and personalities), in order to give Israel possession of their land, so the names of spirit-powers and wicked forces that fight against us would seem strange to our ears.

We can’t always name what is coming against us, but we can always name the One who saves us and fights for us. We cannot possibly recount all the Kings and leaders who set themselves against the People of God because there are just too many (and most of their names are hard to pronounce!). But the record of the Bible is clear and easy to remember: He who is with us and fights for us is greater than ALL of them.

Spiritual opposition can be hard to detect; it isn’t always easy to ‘put your finger on’ what’s happening (and why). Even if we cannot articulate the name of a dark force standing in our way; even if we cannot define what’s ‘wrong’ or ‘off’ or ‘hard’; even when the tumult in our soul has no rational explanation or specific diagnosis, remember, Jesus is our Deliverer.

So, next time you seem confronted by an unexplainable force, don’t try too hard to analyse or identify the source. Just ask yourself what seems to be slipping through your fingers or fading or disappearing? Then, thinking of that, cry out:

“Jesus, defend me. Jesus, deliver me from this ‘King’ who fights against me. Amen.”
